Valentine’s Day celebration on Wednesday
The Business Club will be hosting a Valentine's Event on Wed., Feb. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Henry Hall Courtyard to help build club unity and student bonding in celebration of Valentine’s Day. FREE FOOD will be provided by CSGA, and other clubs have been invited to help out and support this event. All Chaminade students, faculty and staff are invited to attend. As a treat for the students, there will be 30 minutes of live entertainment. There will also be:

Fundraisers: Silk scented rose & balloon combo for $3, 'Your Island Pages' limited edition car phone books for a donation of $1 (courtesy of 'Your Island Pages' Books for Education Program). CUH Polo Team & CUH CJ Sleuths will be selling chocolate, candies & baked goods.
 
Games: Tic-tac-toe & dolphin ring toss for 25¢ with great prizes at the Business Club Booth, as well as couples charade on stage. Gift certificates from Big City Diner will be given to the winners of the game!

Keeping the stream clean
There will be another Palolo stream cleanup on Sat., Feb. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. We’ll meet down by the Third Avenue bridge, and cleaning supplies and cold water will be supplied. The main focus is trash removal, but we may be also paint over any new graffiti that has popped up since the graffiti removal project a couple of weeks ago. Gay Straight Alliance Club events for February
There will be a Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 in CS120, featuring Latter Days, (romance/drama), OR Not Another Gay Movie, (comedy/romance). On Feb. 27, there will be a field trip to Waikiki Community Center at 7 p.m. for Gay Support Group meeting to discuss “Are homophobes really repressed homosexuals?”

The Fujitani Interfaith Program presents “FEAR OF THE DIFFERENCES” on February 24
The Fujitani Interfaith Program host its spring Fujitani Lecture Program entitled “Fear of the Differences” from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 24, at Ching Conference Center. The program will feature Dr. Duncan R. Williams, associate professor of Japanese Buddhism at University of California, Berkeley, who will speak on “Japanese-American Buddhists and the World War II Internment Camps.”
 
Film producer Tom Coffman will also introduce his documentary film “The First Battle,” which focuses on the two years leading up to World War II internment camp years from a Hawaii angle. In addition, Reverend David Hirano, interim senior minister at Central Union Church, will present his reflections on his father’s internment experience. Reverend Dr. Kenneth Tanaka, president of the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies, will moderate a panel discussion on the implications for today with Hakim Ouansafi, president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii and Dr. Jon Van Dyke, professor of constitutional law at William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
 
The program, which includes refreshments, costs $20 with advance registration by Feb. 17, or $30 at the door. Cost for students is $10. Discounted prices for the Chaminade community are $15 for early registration or $20 at the door. Chaminade students' pre-registration fee is $5 or $10 at the door. Frear Laboratory dedication on February 26
The newly-renovated science laboratory Room 02 Henry Hall will be dedicated in honor of the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Trust on Mon., Feb. 26 from 10:30-noon. Light refreshments will be served. For information, contact Wera Panow-Loui at 440-4259.

Service-learning Day is March 2
The call for presenters is out! Service-learning day is Fri., March 2, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Ching Conference Center. We need presenters – everyone is welcome to share their service-learning experiences. Presentations can be whatever works for you, including:

-  Posters (all we need is ONE PowerPoint slide to enlarge!)
-  Slide shows
-  Collages
-  Videos/DVDs
-  Display boards
-  Games/interactive format presentations

All students and faculty are welcome to present - just contact Candice Sakuda at 735-4895 to confirm your intent.

Chase that 50K Hours of Service goal!
Help Chaminade reach its second-annual community service goal of 50,000 hours by participating in one of these two service opportunities:
• IHS (The Institute for Human Services): a large shelter for the homeless. On Sat., Feb. 17, we can sort donations, clean house and read to the children. Transportation will be provided. We will meet in front of Freitas at 8:30 a.m. and return to campus before 1 p.m.
• Hawai‘i Nature Center. On Sat., April 21, we will do some weeding, window washing and a little bit of painting. Transportation will be provided. We will meet in front of Freitas at 8:30 a.m. and return to campus before noon. Attire: Long pants, closed shoes, no tank tops.

“Dead Man Walking” author Helen Prejean to lecture here in March
The Mackey Marianist Lecture Series presents, “Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues” on Sun., Mar. 11, at 4 p.m. in the Mystical Rose Oratory. Co-hosted by Saint Louis School, the Marianist Center of Hawaii and Chaminade, the lecture features Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille. Author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States published in 1993 and The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions published 2004, Sr. Prejean is a passionate advocate for eliminating the death penalty. The lecture will discuss the issue of capital punishment. Sister Prejean will be available to autograph copies of her books, which will also be available for purchase at the event.
