AmeriCorps looking to fill 10-month positions
U.S.VETS-Hawaii is looking for men and women to serve a 10-month term with the AmeriCorps program. Members would provide direct services to homeless veterans in full-time positions such as: case management, outreach, job development, activity coordinator and other veteran services. The 10-month term includes a $10,900 living stipend, healthcare, childcare, loan forbearance and $4,725 education award upon completion of 1,700 hours. The Barber’s Point location has eight positions available and a partnering agency in the Punahou area has two. This opportunity would benefit those in the social services field who want to gain experience and first-hand training with homelessness. Pre-service training begins Dec. 6. Please contact Michelle Wilkins at (808) 682-9001 or e-mail mwilkins@usvetsinc.org.

Statewide smoking ban takes effect at Chaminade
In preparation for the new Hawaii ban on smoking in public areas, there will be changes on campus over the next month.

The new Hawaii Smoke Out Law will take effect on Nov. 16. Basically, there will be no smoking in any buildings, all indoor and outdoor food areas, or within 20 feet of air intake areas, windows that open, and semi-enclosed areas. Our interpretation of semi-enclosed areas includes all campus lanais. As required, we will be posting the international no smoking symbols at all entrances to Chaminade Buildings.

We have been given pamphlets about the Hawaii Tobacco Quit Line sponsored by the Hawaii State Department of Health. These pamphlets will be available in the Student Support Services building and in Freitas 220. We will also be looking into programs provided by our insurance carriers (HMSA and Kaiser).

The green highlighted areas on the map represent the location of the five designated smoking areas on campus. There will be no smoking permitted in any CUH buildings, Lanais, or the Henry Hall Courtyard.
