Earthquake Eats

Photos by Kapono Dowson Ryan

Though the earthquake that hit off the coast of the Big Island on Sunday shook up Chaminade, it was almost business as usual. Grissel Benitez-Hodge, dean of students, and Venus Ituralde, residential life director, made sure the students were safe and the dorms were secure. Aramark had meals in place in the Silversword Café, and the facilities team and security kept the campus running. Though the power was not restored until after 7 p.m., meals, two Masses and the Mackey Lecture Series continued as originally scheduled.

Mackey Lecture Series a go despite Sunday’s earthquake

The Mackey Lecture Series presented “Eucharist and the Church’s Prophetic Mission” on Sunday in the Mystical Rose Oratory, despite the power outage caused by an earthquake that morning. Co-hosted by Saint Louis School, the Marianist Center of Hawaii and Chaminade, the event featured Father David Power, OMI, professor emeritus from the School of Theology and Religious Studies at Catholic University of America. Father Power discussed how the Church draws its inspiration from its character as a eucharistic community and is called to be prophetic in today’s culture and society. Twenty people braved the elements to attend the event.
