Campus improvements continue over summer
Chaminade is pushing ahead on its Campus Master Plan to reshape the Kalaepohaku campus with construction and capital improvement projects.
Nowhere is that more apparent than on Second Road. On April 28, CUH friends and ‘ohana gathered in what was once the Eiben Hall parking lot to bless the ground on which the new Sullivan Family Library and Information Resource Center will be built. A month later, trucks and backhoes were scooping out the landscape.
By the end of June, the heavier excavation equipment moved in, and throughout July, the earth really moved!
Crews completed most of the site’s mass excavation by mid-August – just in time for the return of students and faculty. According to schedule, construction crews will prepare the earth for the site’s foundation through October. Probing and drilling in the area will continue into November.
When completed in 2008, the 30,000-square-foot, three-level library will be the first new permanent structure built on campus in more than 30 years. It will house a high-tech information technology center, an electronic classroom, computer lab, group study areas and larger library collections.
“The new Sullivan Family Library will provide students and faculty with an expanded learning environment that will alter the way research is conducted on and off the campus,” President Sue Wesselkamper said.
More campus improvements included:
Henry Hall – Phase II
• Construction workers gutted the old biology labs and completed steel wall framing.
• Other Henry classrooms were painted and had new carpet installed. Special treatment was given to Henry 107 – it was revived with carpet, fresh paint and new furniture.
Athletics Complex
• Office renovations are in progress for the incoming athletics director.
• Two new coaches’ offices were renovated using Eiben Annex 1.
• Henry Hall Annex, formerly the men’s restroom, was partitioned. Renovations in that structure made space for a training room in one of the halves. Once completed, this new area will include office space for trainers, special tables and a whirlpool.
Freitas Hall
• An office area was created in the basement for a front-desk information services work station and a back office for IT.
• The handicap lift, linking the basement with the first floor, was completed.
• Significant work will continue on repairing termite damage to the lower level stair and landing area.
• The ADA access bridge connecting the second floor to Second Road is nearly finished.
Kieffer Residence Hall
• Two new single student rooms were added to the upstairs lobby area.
Hale Lokelani
• Nearly $250,000 was spent to update the dorm, which houses approximately 80 students.
• In each of its 40 rooms, built-in desks were removed and replaced with new freestanding desks, cabinets were given a facelift, carpeting was replaced, and rooms were painted in lighter colors.
• The lobby and front desk area also received new carpet.
Silversword Café
• The University invested $100,000 to make the dining hall a more cheerful and relaxing place to socialize. Workers reconfigured the space to make it feel like an open restaurant.
• The space was brightened with fresh paint, new tile and new carpet.
• The dish return was relocated and the cashier station moved to provide easier access to the facility.
