Communication students take top honors … again
A team of Chaminade advertising students won the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) for District 13. The Saturday win means that, for the second year in a row, the Chaminade will be going to the national finals – this year in San Francisco.

The group of students from Cliff Bieberly’s advertising campaigns class put together a complete, integrated marketing communication campaign for national sponsor Postal Vault. The team produced a 32-page book and then made a 20-minute pitch to judges. The Chaminade group was competing against Hawaii Pacific University, long considered a powerhouse in the competition.

“It’s a great opportunity for the students,” said Cliff Bieberly, adviser to the Chaminade team. “They worked really hard to make this happen. Plus, we had a lot of support. Carolyn Kuriyama helped refine some of the presenters’ public speaking skills, Stacia Garlach helped coach the presentation and advise the creation of our book, and Tom Galli’s studio production class helped make an infomercial for our presentation with Curtis Washburn and Peggy Friedman performing as characters.”

Other video in the team’s advertising presentation included performances by Tracy Tevorrow, Kay Stone, and Bro. Gary Morris. “Bro. Jerry Bommer even helped us out by loaning a suit jacket to one of the team members,” said Bieberly, “and Carlos Najarro never looked better.” The students won $1,000 and an expense-paid trip to compete at the American Advertising Federation’s NSAC finals in June.

“Pippin” a success thanks to cooperative cast and crew
by Cliff Bieberly
Chaminade students and faculty “had some magic to do” last week, and they did it.

The ambitious musical production, “Pippin” was center stage April 6-9 at the Mamiya Theatre. With Bro. Gary Morris as director, and Chaminade music professor Tim Carney conducting, the play took the audience on a whirlwind tour of the “glories” of war, the lure of power and the search for fulfillment.

“This was a great show to work on because the cast and crew all got along so well,” said Bro. Gary Morris. Referring to the challenge of the show, Bro. Morris said that in addition to acting and singing, most of them had to learn to dance as well. The cast, largely made up of Chaminade students with a few faculty and outside community acting regulars, closed the show Sunday to an audience of about 200.

From Aloha to China Guanxi
by Maureen Caracciolo
On Feb. 24, Hogan student Maureen Caracciolo attended a business program luncheon at the Ala Moana Hotel featuring guest speaker Mike Rowse, Director General of Invest Hong Kong, HKSAR Government. His talk was directed at Hawaiian executives who have achieved success in the Pacific Century, but who may have interests in the fast growth of China’s future investments. Rowse also spoke of helping U.S. companies with free information and advice, and services that would capitalize on Hong Kong’s advantage. The event was both enlightening and encouraging for local entrepreneurs interested in becoming part of the growing wave of commerce in China.

Earth Day 2006 Celebration: Art and nature – interdependence
by Kapono Dowson-Ryan
Chaminade University’s Gender Studies and Environmental Studies, along with the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists Women and Environment Program, are co-sponsoring a CELEBRATION FOR EARTH DAY 2006 from 7 to 9 p.m. this Thurs., April 13, at the Ching Conference Center. The event is open to the public and includes a FREE viewing of Andy Goldsworthy’s film ‘Rivers and Tides: Working with Time’.

“Andy Goldsworthy is an extraordinary artist, who creates art in nature working with nature,” said Dr. Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel, Chaminade Gender Studies Director and event organizer. “Seeing Goldsworthy create art dramatically illustrates Buddhist principles like interdependence and impermanence in most remarkable and inspiring ways.” The film has been described as “ravishingly beautiful” by the NY Times. With more than ten four-star reviews from the nation’s top critics, ‘Rivers and Tides” serenely captures Goldsworthy in the midst of constructing his trademark ephemera on-camera, creating a mesmerizing cinematic experience that helps us to appreciate nature in new and enchanting ways. Professor Yukio Ozaki of Chaminade University, a renowned ceramist, and a living treasure of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii will lead a discussion after the 90 minute award-winning film. For more information call Dr. Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel at 735-4822.

Books donated to Hogan Library
Rosa Say, Hogan Advisory Board member and author of Managing with Aloha, has donated 18 new management/leadership books to the Hogan Library (Keiffer 29). She provided multiple copies of many of the titles, along with additional copies of her own book.

“We are indebted to Rosa for her generosity,” said John Webster, director of the Hogan program. “The books will be of particular interest to Hogan students preparing for their Leadership workshop.” The books are available for checkout by simply signing the sheet on the Hogan Library bookshelf.
