KUMU KEOLA'S ISLAND TOUR OF SACRED SITESKumu-in-Residence John Keola Lake led Hui 'Imi La'akea and Na Ala Hele I Ke Ao on a tour of sacred sites of O'ahu this past Saturday, November 8, 2003."Spending time with Kumu Keola is always a special and memorable experience," said Kuulei Reyes with Chaminade's Hawaiian program. Kumu Keola explained to his students the significance of Punahou's logo of the hala tree and the pool and shared stories about the petroglyphs depicting the dog, an 'aumakua or guardian of Nu'uanu. The highlight of the trip was Kukaniloko, considered by ancient Hawaiians as one of the most sacred places on the island of O'ahu. Located in the center of the island in the pineapple fields of Wahiawa, Kukaniloko was where high ranking chiefesses would go to give birth to their sacred high-ranking children. |
