CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES ABOVE KIEFFER HALL

Jackhammers pound through rock and backhoes scoop up dirt, making for a cacophony of heavy metal construction equipment meeting the hard rock pohaku of Chaminade.Construction will continue on the mauka side of the road from Kieffer Hall through the early part of next year. According to Chaminade's Facilities Department, there will be noise and dust, but all efforts will be made to keep the inconvenience to a minimum.

Once the parking lot is completed they hope to have about 20 to 30 more parking places available, said Physical Plant Director Michael Haisen. The lot will be paved and striped with landscaping added to form a visual barrier. The landscaping will enhance the campus by using plants that are complementary.

In the meantime, 14 new parking spots will continue to be available to Chaminade Faculty and staff in the newly opened lot next to the Mystical Rose Oratory. The chains to the new parking area were taken off recently. The spaces will be available from 6:00 am. to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The lot will also be rechained every afternoon at 5:00 pm, as well as on weekends to allow parking for functions at the Mystical Rose.

WASC Approves Online MED

Chaminade's online Master’s in Education (MED) is the University's first degree program to receive full approval by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), the University's accrediting agency.  The program, designed for neighbor island students, will present a degree which mirrors Chaminade's regular campus MED.“The program has had an enormous success since we started it,” said Chaminade’s Master of Education Program Director Rosemary Wolfe, PhD. “This approval validates the quality of our program.”

In January the Ed Division will join a Secondary Education Licensure program to the MED so that off-island students will be able to be recommended for teaching licensure to the State of Hawaii as well as receive the MED.“This will bring opportunities to people who otherwise would be unable to get their degrees,” Dr. Wolfe said.

In terms of enrollment, Chaminade's is currently the largest online program among those offered by Hawaii universities.  Between the graduate and undergraduate programs, the University offers over 50 online courses a term with average enrollment of about 750 a term.  At the graduate level, the University offers courses in Criminal Justice Administration and Pastoral Theology and Leadership along with those from Education.

NOTABLES

Elementary Education Lecturer Karen Drozd has been chosen as Hawaii’s state representative to the Orff-Schulwerk Association Conference to be held in Louisville, Kentucky next week (November 13 – 16). This year’s conference will have a special forum on the issue of failing to prepare new teachers to meet the fine arts standards and the possible liability resulting from inadequate training. Karen has also been invited back next year to make a presentation to the group as an ethnomusicologist specializing in Polynesian music. She hopes to also add a second session presentation on using multicultural literature to enhance the music class at that time.

Chaminade MBA grad Jonathon Cowles ’03 just finished an excursion of a lifetime. Following graduation Jonathon embarked on a rowing journey that has taken him along the coast of South Korea. The Spirit of Hawaii and Friendship Coastal Korean tour has been a huge success with wide recognition of Korean media but more so according to Jonathon because it has shown an image of an American working together with Koreans that has generated a widespread of support in Korea. Jonathon hopes to present a koa paddle as a gift to the President of North Korea Roh Moo-hyun. Jonathon will remain in Seoul as he awaits the possibilities of extending his rowing visit to include the coast of North Korea.

ART EXHIBIT CONTINUES
